Concern has been raised with the new EU FCM protocol start date between South Africa and Europe. Along with Load Shedding Stage 6 recently implemented in South Africa, and the high costs of exporting in the cost chain, do we expect to see a drop on Europe volume and other market, already under space constraints, targeted? There is hope that between relevant government authorities and CGA, a workable solution can be found for Europe, avoiding a loss on an already strained industry.
SOUTH AFRICAN PORTS & CONTAINER FREIGHT STATIONS
DURBAN PORT
Durban terminals are operating as normal, with reports of high traffic volumes and high demand on transport booking system.
Power outage impacting waterside and landside operations at Durban Point terminal on Wednesday 22nd June 2022.
Strong wind was experienced on 23rd June 2022.
Vessel berthing delays:
- Pier 1 – 3-4 days
- Pier 2 – 1-2days
- Point – 0 days
CFS is experiencing high container volumes, with operations proceeding as normal.
CAPE TOWN PORT
High traffic volumes and high demand on transport booking system.
Strong winds on 23rd June 2022; with 4 hour halt on port operations.
Vessel berthing delays:
- CTCT – 1-2 days
- MPT – 0 days
CFS is seeing high cargo volumes.
PORT ELIZABETH PORT
All terminal operations are as normal.
Seasonal high winds experienced through the week.
Vessel berthing delays:
- PECT – 0 days
- NCT – 1-2 days
All CFS operations and IDMs are normal and on time.
LOCAL NEWS
For the first time ever, Coega Port is experiencing Load Shedding. Not only is this affecting turn around of empties collection but delays in export containers being gated into the port, adding further delay on an already time sensitive chain.
GLOBAL NEWS
TRACES, the electronic EDI between RSA and EU NPPO, has been down since 23 June. This issue is resulting in shipments being unable to be released at destination. Please contact your relevant Logistics Manager to assist in pushing release with DALLRD.
USA/CANADA
AMEX service still under heavy pressure with Canada transport issues as well as delays in USA conventional vessel. Due to high volume and labour shortages, most terminals are experiencing congestion issues. Most North American ports are facing berthing congestion with some carriers are omitting ports and altering schedules for services into US East Coast due to high congestion and delays. - Vessel schedule delays and extended voyage times impacting all European & Med services.
- Amended port rotations and port omissions may result in amended cargo loadings.
- Vessel changes and “blanked sailings” on the trade.

- Operational challenges and increasing fuel prices are impacting freight rates, bunker pricing and surcharges on the trade.
