Industry Update

16th August 2022

I hope everyone is holding up as we head into the last few weeks of mayhem and madness…May the force be with us all!!!

While shipping lines publish HUGE profits recently, it has felt like a smack in the face for everyone who has had to carry these exorbitant hikes that they have hit us with over and over again in the last 2 years in spite of the equipment shortages. Global trends however seem to be pointing in the right direction…but let not jinx it. Your CSM’s and Log managers will keep you posted on any new developments we see!

EU Blocked containers and phytos

The first official letter was sent to the Netherlands NPPO on 27 July 2022 and a positive response was received on 28 July 2022. It based on this agreement that an arrangement was stuck that replacement phytosanitary certificates will be issued for oranges with equivalent cold treatment declaration. Issuance of replacement phytosanitary certificates for oranges started on Monday, 1 August 2022.

In a meeting with industry on 3 August 2022 the DALRRD agreed to include other ports of entry after receiving yet another positive response from Italy on equivalent cold treatment declaration. The ports that were presented by industry as those where South African oranges were rejected included ports in Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. Over 2 000 containers, at an estimated value of R 500 million, were affected by this blockage.

For the most part, it looks like GoReefer have things under control, but please speak to your CSM or Log manager if you have any outstanding phyto issues.

Felixstowe port workers to strike after pay rise talks stalemate

UK trade union Unite announced on Friday that 1 900 of its members who work at Felixstowe port would be downing tools for eight days from August 21-29. This comes after talks at the conciliation service, Acas, failed to result in a reasonable offer last week. “Strike action will cause huge disruption and will generate massive shockwaves throughout the UK’s supply chain, but this dispute is entirely of the company’s own making. It has had every opportunity to make our members a fair offer but has chosen not to do so. Felixstowe needs to stop prevaricating and make a pay offer which meets our members’ expectations,” Morton said

It’s a record…

MSC Aino sailed Cape Town for Europe on the 9th of August with a total of 2099 live reefers onboard. This is a record for the most live reefers loaded ex South Africa on a single vessel.

Duty Deadline:

With the duty deadline is the 14/10/2022, please chat with your log manager or CSM if you have any questions.
