Industry Update

13th March 2023

Good morning all.

Loadings over the last three days have been at a high with cross hauls and new loads, whilst not as smooth and effortless as we would have liked. Transport requests in Port Elizabeth and Durban have started picking up, making planning even more vital. Weather in Cape Town is expected to be windy the next two days which will affect loading and booking slots in the port. Hopefully though not as bad as we have seen in the past weeks:

On some positive news: DALRRD and PPECB have listened to our requests from the Industry and granted dispensation on fruit age given the situation the Port has caused. WE WORK TOGETHER.

An important notice on Taiwan loadings:

Please take notice of the following points below, which must be in place when loading 21 pallets in general and 21 pallets specific for Taiwan. Share within your teams and please provide the info to the cold stores in your regions. Ask the cold store operator to also disseminate the request to his/her exporter/agent/forwarding companies.

GENERAL

21 pallets stuffed into reefer containers will only be allowed under the following conditions:

  • No excessive force is used during the stuffing of the container,
  • Pallets must be protrude over the red load lines, side walls and the door-end.
  • Minimum gap between the door and the last two pallets loaded must be the red load lines or alternative the end of the T-bar floor.
  • Pallets must not block the return air grid, minimum gap allowed between top of pallet and the roof must be 75mm or alternatively the red load lines,

TAIWAN

Very important in the case of loading 21 pallets for Taiwan, it is recommended not to use the Shipping Line onboard probes due to the length of the sensor’s cables. Arrangements must be made for portable recorders to be delivered to the loading point and installed by PPECB at the time of stuffing the container/s.

The problem with Taiwan is the onboard USDA proves are pulling very tight, especially in the specific placement positions P2 and P3. You might run the risk of them pulling out, which will end up in a rejection by BAPHIQ

Also remember to work from the centre line of the container when placing a sensor PI.
