With President Biden latest Ocean Shipping Reform Act, regulating freight costs and congestion seeming to eas in Asia, are we expecting to see a relief on the high cost of Freight on the logistics supply chain? Some experts think this may still go on till 2023 causing an already hard hit cost chain to be under more of a crunch.

SOUTH AFRICAN PORTS & CONTAINER FREIGHT STATIONS

On Tuesday 14th June, reports were received of a national transport strike by the ATDF. National roads between Durban and Johannesburg were blocked, delaying the movement of trucks. Further notification was received of possible protest action between 14th and 17th June 2022. On Wednesday 15th June, confirmation received that roads were clear and traffic moving as normal.

DURBAN PORT

Durban terminals are operating as normal, with reports of high traffic volumes and high demand on transport booking system.
High to gale force winds expected on from Friday 17th June.
Vessel berthing delays:

  • Pier 1 – 0 days
  • Pier 2 – 4-6 days
  • Point – 0 days

CFS is experiencing high container volumes, backlogged containers have mostly been cleared.

CAPE TOWN PORT

High traffic volumes and high demand on transport booking system.

Strong winds experienced in the early part of the week.

Vessel berthing delays:

    • CTCT – 0 days
    • MPT – 0 days

CFS is seeing high cargo volumes.

All IDMs are moving as normal.

PORT ELIZABETH PORT

All terminal operations are as normal.

Strong to gale force winds experienced in the early part of the week.

Vessel berthing delays:

    • PECT – 0 days

NCT – 0 days

All CFS operations and IDMs are normal and on time.

LOCAL NEWS

EU released amended measures with regards to exports of citrus and risk of FCM. The new rule, effective 14 July 2022 (please refer to page L 165/30 to L165/39). DALRRD is seeking clarification on the application of the timing implication, for this new ruling to take effect. Port Elizabeth is starting to feel effects of equipment shortage given vessel omissions/change in rotations. MSC will start releasing based on stacks in the near future. Conventional vessel for Middle East ex Cape Town and Port Elizabeth planned for week 26/27. Given shortage of vessels and limited space on those vessels calling, this is a potential solution for full coldstores.

GLOBAL NEWS

Shipments into Taiwan have started seeing rejections due to Carnauba Wax restrictions on fruit. CGA is currently liaising with relevant parties however it is suggested that fruit on the water or in RSA coldstores be diverted until further clarity.

USA/CANADA

AMEX service still under heavy pressure with Canada transport issues as well as delays in USA conventional vessel. Due to high volume and labour shortages, most terminals are experiencing congestion issues. Most North American ports are facing berthing congestion with some carriers are omitting ports and altering schedules for services into US East Coast due to high congestion and delays. There is an indication of an “EXTRA LOADER” to New York/Canada ex Durban and Cape Town. Once confirmed by Maersk, we will inform relevant clients seeking space

UK, NWC & MED

  • Both MSC Brittany and MSC Anya will be omitting Hamburg in order to keep berthing slots in Europe.
  • Vessel schedule delays and extended voyage times impacting all European & Med services.
  • Amended port rotations and port omissions may result in amended cargo loadings.
  • Vessel changes and “blanked sailings” on the trade.
  • Extended transit times.
  • High cargo demand and limited vessel capacity
  • Operational challenges and increasing fuel prices are impacting freight rates, bunker pricing and surcharges on the trade.
