Industry Update

15th July 2022

We are still receiving mixed messages from abroad about the new EU regulation and from which date they will implement the new declaration as some EU importers is stating that all Phyto’s approved from 24 June must have the new declaration on while others is saying it’s only Phyto’s approved from the 14th of July onwards that will need the new declaration , Goreefers  however are speaking to DALRRD to clear this up as quickly as possible to prevent delays of cargo clearance in European ports.

Local Ports

CAPE TOWN PORT

Vessels currently alongside between 3-5 days @ Cape Town Terminal and 4-7 days @ MPT

High traffic volumes experienced in CPT and Belcon rail is looked at to take pressure of the road traffic into the terminal.

The good news is that Cape town container rejection rate is down to 7% from a high of 23% last week

A vessel has been secured to move the 9th crane from Durban to Cape Town and she is expected to arrive in Durban at the end of July. Further Reading.

EASTERN CAPE PORTS

Coega port is currently experiencing high amount of short shipment/rollovers of EU&MED cargo with shipping lines omitting due to low productivity in Durban resulting in EU/MED/RU cargo being routed via Lomé resulting in delays of up to 4 weeks.

Strikes and road closures have also been experienced yesterday in PE causing delays.

Currently vessels are alongside @ Coega Terminal between 2-4 days and 3-5 days @ PE Terminal.

DURBAN PORT

Low productivity in DBN port is causing major concern and chaos down the coast with vessels omitting Coega and Cape Town to keep schedule integrity @ EU ports.

Vessels currently alongside ranging from 10-15 days @ MPT terminal, 5-9 days @ Pier 1 and 5-13 days @ Pier 2 with the biggest delays on FE services we have experienced short shipments on China containers that is mostly unheard of and all due to low productivity in Durban.

Please also see attached notification send out today of more delays in DBN due to high traffic volume.

Shipping Lines

On a positive note for the 1st time in in nearly 3 years we have seen a reduction in freight to EU even if it’s just a small reduction we will take the win and are very happy to see the graph going the opposite direction for once and we thank our team that have worked tirelessly to achieve this.

Things to take note of:

Singapore is still an issue with limited space on feeder vessels to Japan, Malaysia

Cargo loaded to the MED/Russia with MSC need to be tracked regularly as containers are being routed via different transshipment ports causing delays of up to 3 weeks at a time.(Keep an eye on your Root 2 Go Delay In Transshipment Report)

German Port Strike

German dockers confirmed they will begin a second-round strike in the key container ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, and Wilhelmshaven as wage negotiations with employers have not come to an agreement.

The dockers work stoppage will begin from 6.00 am CET, Thursday 14th July until 6.00 am CET Saturday, 16th July.

The strikes may incur delays in container availability at the Terminals and/or delays on departing export containers from any of the ports.

We are monitoring the situation and will advise on any further updates.
